Human remains discovered in Leicester last year have been formally identified as those of a Polish national who vanished nearly two decades ago.
Discovery and Identification
The remains were found in scrubland off Great Central Way in Leicester during October. Following extensive forensic testing, authorities have confirmed they belong to Malgorzata Wnuczek, who was 27 years old when she disappeared.
Ms Wnuczek was last seen on 31 May 2006. She was captured on CCTV boarding a bus after finishing her shift at work, and was never seen again.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Leicestershire Police have confirmed that a 39-year-old man was arrested in connection with the investigation into Ms Wnuczek's disappearance and death. However, he was subsequently released without any further action being taken against him.
The force has stated that the case remains an open and ongoing investigation. Detectives are continuing to work on the case and are in regular contact with the Polish authorities to keep Ms Wnuczek's family informed of any developments.
A Nearly Two-Decade Mystery
The identification brings a tragic form of closure to a mystery that has lasted for almost 20 years. For nearly two decades, the family of Malgorzata Wnuczek have lived with the anguish of not knowing her fate.
While the discovery of her remains answers one painful question, the circumstances surrounding her death are still under active investigation by Leicestershire Police's specialist teams.
