An arrest has been made in the American state of Georgia in connection with the fatal shooting of a young rapper in Ohio more than two years ago, a killing police say stemmed from a dispute over a music video.
Charges Filed in Long-Running Investigation
Ronell Scott, aged 25, now faces a murder charge for the death of 20-year-old TreShawn Smith in October 2022. A warrant for his arrest was issued in April of last year, culminating in his recent detention. Scott was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on Monday and is being held on a bond set at $500,000. In addition to murder, he has been charged with aggravated murder and felonious assault.
Investigators stated that the conflict leading to Smith's death involved two groups trading insults through a series of music videos. Smith was reportedly shot in the head while with friends at a fountain on Elm Street in Lockland, Ohio. The assailant, alleged to be Scott, drove by, opened fire, and then fled the scene.
A Mother's Quest for Justice and Forgiveness
The victim's mother, Evvie Smith, spoke to local media following news of the arrest. "Just knowing that a person has been indicted, that means the detectives, the prosecutors cared enough to seek justice for my son," she said.
She revealed that her son had created his rap video well before the feud escalated and never intended for it to be taken as a personal affront. "It wasn't to be taken personal, and I think that it was just taken personal," she reflected. "Why not just come back with another rap lyric... Just make another song. It's just a song."
In a powerful display of resilience, Evvie Smith has previously expressed her decision to forgive the perpetrator, rejecting calls for "street justice." "I had to forgive. I can't have that burden on my heart. I cannot sit around here and have hatred in my heart for nobody," she stated. Her primary demand has consistently been for the judicial system to hold the killer accountable.

TreShawn Smith was killed just two weeks before his 21st birthday. He had aspirations of becoming a firefighter and was described by his mother as not only her child but also her friend.
