A fundraiser set up in memory of a Glasgow bartender who died after an assault has raised more than £30,000. Daniel Colrain, 21, sustained fatal injuries following a disturbance at Royal Exchange Square in the city centre at around 3.05am on Sunday, October 21. He was taken to hospital but died on Monday.
A post-mortem examination took place on Tuesday. Another man, also aged 21, sustained minor injuries during the incident.
Family statement
Daniel worked at the Old Smiddy bar in Cathcart, Glasgow's Southside, where he grew up. Colleagues paid tribute to their "dear friend" and set up a GoFundMe page for his family, which has now raised over £30,000.
Daniel's family, including parents Kevin and Valerie, shared a statement on the pub's Facebook page on Sunday. The statement read: "We are truly overwhelmed by the response to this page, not just the scale and range of the generosity, but the heart-warming and comforting sentiment and testimonies on Daniel's character and personality.
"We know how warm and beautiful Daniel's heart and soul were, and how his smile and positive disposition affected people in significant ways. The echoes of love shared by the community will ensure a beautiful and genuine legacy for our beloved son, Daniel.
"We are eternally grateful to Michael and his wonderful team at the Smiddy, the beating heart of our community. To everyone who has donated and left a message of support, love, warmth and well-wishing, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and the top of our souls; we are both comforted and humbled.
"Please continue to share your favourite stories and memories of Daniel so that the beauty and warmth of his character and spirit create a lasting legacy and indelible imprint on all our lives and our community."
Court proceedings
A former Partick Thistle youth goalkeeper was granted bail on Thursday after appearing in court charged with killing Daniel and attempting to flee to Dubai. Luis Cameron, 19, allegedly assaulted Daniel in Royal Exchange Square in the early hours of Sunday, October 4. Court papers state Cameron, of Paisley, Renfrewshire, punched Mr Colrain on the head.
It is claimed that this rendered him unconscious and that he fell then struck his head off the ground. A second allegation says Cameron attempted to pervert the course of justice by booking a flight from Glasgow to Dubai on October 4. He is stated to have left the scene of the assault, attended the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and pretended that he injured his hand by hitting a wall. The charge goes on to say that he then went to Glasgow Airport in an attempt to avoid capture and prosecution for the culpable homicide charge.
Another 19-year-old man was also arrested in connection with the disturbance. He has been released pending further enquiries. A third man, aged 21, was also assaulted and sustained minor injuries during the incident. A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with this and is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.
Police confirmed that enquiries are ongoing. Detective Inspector Jonny MacKinnon, of Greater Glasgow CID, said: "I would like to thank the public for their assistance with this investigation."
