Campaigners Demand More Protection Amid Calls for Youth Social Media Ban

The mothers of two girls whose lives were shattered after brutal attacks were shared online have welcomed Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's plan to ban under-16s from social media. Vicky Donald and Angela Jarvis, whose daughters were victims of violence that went viral, say the proposed ban is a major step forward but warn that tech giants must do far more to protect children. The ban, which would affect platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, X, and YouTube, comes amid the Daily Record's Our Kids ... Our Future campaign, launched in 2023 after a spate of violent attacks on young people in Scotland were filmed and uploaded online.

In recent months, Douglas Daniel, brother of family kingpin Jamie, was jailed alongside his wife Barbara for the evil treatment of children in their care. Douglas, 80, and Barbara, 75, were sentenced to 30 months at Glasgow Sheriff Court in March after being found guilty of subjecting six children to cruel and unnatural treatment between 1986 and 1991.
