In a significant breakthrough, a woman has been arrested in connection with the cold case murder of an Iowa real estate agent that had remained unsolved for nearly fifteen years. Kristin Ramsey, aged 53, was detained on Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ashley Okland, who was 27 years old at the time of her killing, according to the West Des Moines Police Department.
A Tragic Discovery in 2011
Ashley Okland was found dead with two gunshot wounds on April 8, 2011, inside a model home she was showcasing for Iowa Realty Co. The incident occurred in the middle of the day, around 2 p.m., when an employee at the model townhouse heard a commotion and went to investigate. He discovered Okland critically injured and immediately called 911. Despite being rushed to Iowa Methodist Medical Center, she later succumbed to her injuries.
Long-Standing Mystery and Community Impact
Okland's murder had baffled investigators for almost fifteen years, becoming a cold case that haunted the local community. West Des Moines Assistant Police Chief Jody Hayes remarked that the case has loomed over the community's head for years, with many officials losing sleep over the details. Hayes stated, 'Ashley's story has kept many of us awake at night, revisiting the details over and over in our minds. Searching for that missing piece that would tie everything together and lead us down the right path to identifying a person that was responsible for this act.'
The investigation revealed that at the time of the murder, Kristin Ramsey was working as an administrative assistant and sales manager for Rottlund Homes, the developer of the townhouse where Okland was killed. According to the Des Moines Register, Ramsey currently works for Midland Title & Escrow, an organization that is part of Iowa Realty Co., where Okland was employed at the time of her death.
Family Reactions and Gratitude
Okland's family expressed profound gratitude for the arrest after years of uncertainty. Her sister, Brittany Bruce, shared her emotional response, saying, 'That Friday afternoon when Ashley was taken from us seems so long ago. We had lost our hope in finding answers and having any justice for Ashley. It was really difficult to accept that the case had gone cold.' Okland's brother, Josh, also praised investigators, noting his confidence in prosecutors as they move forward with the case.
Employer's Response and Shock
A spokesperson for Iowa Realty Co., Okland's former employer, hailed the break in the case, stating, 'Everyone within Iowa Realty and related companies was relieved for the family of our friend and colleague Ashley Okland that an arrest was made for her murder. Her tragic passing was something that not only deeply impacted our company and community, but the national real estate world as a whole.' However, the organization expressed shock upon learning that Ramsey is the suspect.
Legal Proceedings and Future Steps
Kristin Ramsey was booked into the Dallas County Jail and is being held on a $2 million cash bond. Police indicated on Wednesday that they do not anticipate any further arrests in connection with this case. The Daily Mail has reached out to the West Des Moines Police Department, Midland Title & Escrow, and Kristin Ramsey for comment, but responses are pending.
This arrest marks a pivotal moment in a long-standing investigation, bringing a measure of closure to a community and family that have waited for justice for over a decade. The case underscores the persistent efforts of law enforcement in solving cold cases, even after many years have passed.
