A 60-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of a newborn baby whose body was discovered in a shopping bag in California three decades ago. The Monterey County Sheriff's Department announced the arrest of Pamela Ferreyra, who is believed to be the infant's mother, following advances in DNA technology.
The baby boy, later named Baby Garin, was found on December 3, 1994, by a man searching for aluminium cans at an unofficial garbage dump on Garin Road in Monterey County. The infant, estimated to be about three days old, was wrapped in a pink and blue blanket inside a red shopping bag. He was dressed in a turquoise sleeper suit, blue jumper, and white socks and cap, according to reports from the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Authorities determined the baby had not been stillborn, but the cause of death has not been released due to decomposition. The case went cold after investigators were unable to identify the mother or the child. However, a new cold case task force reopened the investigation last year, and DNA from the baby led detectives to Ferreyra. Follow-up interviews and DNA samples confirmed her identity as the mother.
Ferreyra was taken into custody last week and arraigned on Friday. She is being held at Monterey County Jail on a $1 million bond. Assistant District Attorney Matt L'Heureux stated that Ferreyra has other children and works as an in-home health care provider. He noted that some suspects in cold cases are surprised by the knock on the door, adding, 'We're happy that this day has come.'
Sheriff Tina M. Nieto said the name Garin was chosen because it means protection, emphasising that every child deserves protection and justice. The case highlights the use of advanced DNA technology to solve long-standing cold cases, with authorities urging anyone with information on other cases to come forward.
