Unsolved Murder: 17 Years On, Doorstep Shooting Killer Still At Large
17 Years On: Doorstep Shooting Killer Still At Large

Nearly two decades have passed since a brutal doorstep shooting claimed the life of a young man in the West Midlands, with the perpetrator still evading justice. The heartbreaking case of Scott Buchanan, who was ruthlessly gunned down outside his family home, continues to haunt both his loved ones and detectives who have pursued countless leads.

A Family Tragedy That Remains Unsolved

On the evening of November 12, 2008, 23-year-old Scott Buchanan was fatally shot in the chest at close range on the driveway of his home on Callaghan Road in the Tividale area of Tipton, Sandwell. The tragedy unfolded after Scott's mother, Caron, answered the door and was assaulted. Scott went outside to assist her, where he encountered the gunman who then fled the scene.

Despite an intensive murder investigation by West Midlands Police, which involved nearly 1,000 witness statements and the arrest of four individuals, no charges have ever been brought. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, adding to the mystery that has persisted for 17 years.

Desperate Appeals and Unanswered Questions

Scott's family have made numerous emotional appeals for information over the years, desperately seeking closure. On the tenth anniversary of the killing in 2018, Caron Buchanan spoke publicly about her enduring pain. "Nothing can ever take away the pain of losing Scott and there is not a day that goes by without him being in our thoughts," she said. "He had his life ahead of him and although I am a grandmother, I often think about whether I would have been a grandmother to his children too."

She added, "Being close to him when it happened, but being so defenceless to stop it, is something that will haunt me forever." These heartfelt words underscore the lasting impact of this unsolved crime on those left behind.

Police Determination Amidst Frustration

Detective Superintendent Matt Markham of Force CID emphasised the ongoing commitment to solving the case, even years later. "It may be 10 years since Scott was shot dead but we remain as determined to bring whoever was responsible for his murder to justice," he stated in 2018. "Despite taking hundreds of statements we are still seeking that crucial breakthrough which will enable us to catch the killer."

The investigation has seen successive appeals for information, yet all have ultimately come to nothing, leaving the case classified as a cold file. The lack of a clear motive and the absence of forensic breakthroughs have compounded the challenges faced by officers.

A Community Still Seeking Answers

As the 17-year mark approaches, the local community in Tipton and the wider Sandwell area continues to grapple with the unresolved nature of this violent crime. The shooting not only robbed a young man of his future but has left a lingering shadow over the neighbourhood, with residents and authorities alike hoping for a resolution.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the difficulties in solving complex murder investigations, particularly when witnesses are reluctant to come forward or key evidence remains elusive. For Scott Buchanan's family, the passage of time has done little to ease their grief, as they await the day when justice might finally be served.
