World's longest nonstop flight: Qantas Sydney-London 22h

Qantas is set to launch the world's longest nonstop commercial flight in October 2027, flying from London Heathrow to Sydney, Australia, a distance of 10,573 miles. The journey will take over 20 hours, surpassing the current record held by Singapore Airlines' 19-hour Singapore to New York route.

Specially modified Airbus A350

Travel expert Simon Calder revealed details after visiting Airbus headquarters. The plane is a specially modified Airbus A350 Twin Jet equipped with a 20,000-litre fuel tank, eliminating the need for refueling stops. Qantas has labeled the route "the final frontier of long-haul travel."

Passenger comfort and reduced capacity

To enhance comfort on the ultra-long flight, Qantas will reduce passenger capacity to 238 seats—almost 100 fewer than British Airways and Virgin Atlantic on similar aircraft. This allows for more spacious seating and amenities.

Premium demand and surcharge

According to Calder, Qantas believes there is a "premium customer base" willing to pay a 20% surcharge over one-stop flights to avoid layovers. Many passengers prefer to avoid changing planes in hubs like Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, or Abu Dhabi.

Fuel prices and demand

Despite rising fuel costs, Qantas reports increased demand for direct flights to Australia, making the route viable. The airline sees no need for a Middle Eastern stopover.

New York route also planned

Initially, the record-breaking flight was considered from New York, but London was chosen for the launch. New York will later get its own direct Qantas flight, which will be slightly shorter in duration.
