UK Warns of 2-Day Travel Disruption in Ankara for NATO Summit

The UK Foreign Office has issued a travel disruption warning for areas of Ankara, Turkey, over July 7 and 8, coinciding with the NATO summit that has drawn world leaders to the capital. Road closures and restrictions are in place around key venues, and commercial air travel at Ankara Esenboga Airport is prohibited during specific hours.

Air Travel Restrictions at Ankara Esenboga Airport

All commercial flights to and from Ankara Esenboga Airport are banned from 7am to 3pm Turkish time on July 7, and from 11am to 6pm on July 8, according to the Foreign Office update. The airport will also operate under enhanced security measures, likely resulting in longer processing times. Travelers are advised to arrive early, ensure documentation is ready, and expect stricter screening procedures.

Road Closures and Public Transport Impacts

The Foreign Office stated: "Due to the NATO Summit being held in Ankara on 7-8 July, there will be road closures and restrictions around key venues." Public transport routes in the city will also be affected during the two-day event.

Broader Regional Context

The warning comes amid wider regional tensions. The Foreign Office previously noted that the US and Iran have announced a memorandum of understanding related to the conflict in the Middle East, adding that "the situation remains unpredictable and attacks could resume at short notice."

NATO Summit Agenda

The summit in Ankara focuses on defence spending, the defence industry, and support for Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said: "The task ahead is clear: to turn Allied commitments into concrete results. Increased investment, industrial production and continued support for Ukraine. All of this contributes to a stronger NATO and greater security for all of us." The meeting is also expected to address NATO members' progress on the historic 5% defence investment plan.
