UAE's High-Speed Passenger Rail Set to Revolutionise Inter-City Travel
In a landmark development for the United Arab Emirates, a new passenger rail service is poised to launch this year, dramatically cutting travel times between Dubai and Abu Dhabi to under one hour. Operated by Etihad Rail, the national railway network, this initiative marks a significant shift from its current focus on freight transportation to a comprehensive passenger system.
Enhanced Connectivity Across Key Urban Centres
The ambitious network will link 11 major cities, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah, with services rolling out in phased stages. Trains are designed to accommodate up to 400 passengers each, with a fleet of 13 new units featuring ergonomic seating, modern interiors, complimentary wifi, and individual power outlets at every seat. Etihad Rail projects an annual ridership of 36.5 million passengers by 2030, underscoring the service's anticipated popularity.
Unprecedented Speed and Efficiency
Operating at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour, the trains will enable commuters to travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in just 50 minutes—a substantial improvement over the current hour-and-a-half journey by bus or car. Similarly, trips from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah will be reduced to one hour and 40 minutes. Etihad Rail emphasises that the service will run on a precise schedule, offering a reliable alternative to congested roadways.
Strategic Locations and Advanced Technology
Mohammed Alshehii, chief projects officer at Etihad Rail, highlighted that connected areas have been strategically selected, such as Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah, and the Al Hilal area in Fujairah. Azza AlSuwaidi, deputy CEO, described the network as a "cornerstone of the UAE's national transport ecosystem," noting partnerships with leading international operators to integrate next-generation fleets and advanced technologies for optimal quality, reliability, and safety.
Future Expansion and Operational Timeline
While an official opening date and ticket sales are yet to be announced, Etihad Rail confirms the launch is scheduled for this year. The tracks, operational since 2016 primarily for freight, will soon support passenger travel. Looking ahead, the company plans to explore expansion opportunities beyond UAE borders once the full network is operational.
