Trump Administration Abruptly Fires Top Aviation Safety Expert Todd Inman
Trump Administration Fires Top Aviation Safety Expert Todd Inman

In a startling development, Todd Inman, a prominent member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), has disclosed that he was abruptly fired by the Trump administration without any explanation provided for his termination. The dismissal occurred with immediate effect, sending shockwaves through aviation safety circles.

Sudden Termination Without Notice

Mr Inman, who played a significant public role in investigating last year's fatal midair collision between an airliner and an Army helicopter near Washington D.C., stated that he received notice on Friday from the White House personnel office. The communication informed him that his position on the board was "terminated effective immediately." He emphasised that no reason has been given for his firing, leaving questions about the administration's motivations unanswered.

The White House offered no immediate comment when approached by The Associated Press for a response, adding to the mystery surrounding this sudden personnel change at a critical safety agency.

Pattern of Controversial Dismissals

This firing follows a concerning pattern within the Trump administration. Last year, Brown and Robert Primus, who served on the U.S. Surface Transportation Board, were dismissed under similar circumstances. Both were the only Black board members overseeing their respective independent agencies at the time of their terminations.

Both men have challenged their firings in court, with the group Democracy Forward filing discrimination claims on their behalf. When Brown was fired from the NTSB, experts noted they couldn't recall such a dismissal from the agency in recent memory.

The White House has previously asserted that President Trump was within his legal rights to fire Brown and Primus, claiming that performance issues rather than bias drove those decisions. However, the lack of transparency surrounding these terminations continues to raise questions.

Critical Safety Investigations Impacted

The NTSB, tasked by Congress with investigating aviation accidents and significant transportation disasters, currently has approximately 1,250 active cases. Mr Inman's dismissal comes at a particularly sensitive time for the agency.

Inman served as the lead board member investigating last year's crash of a UPS cargo plane in Kentucky that claimed 15 lives. He also played a key role in the investigation into the January 2025 midair collision between a passenger jet and Army helicopter that killed 67 people.

After major incidents, the NTSB typically sends a board member to the crash site for initial briefings and to oversee the preliminary investigation. Inman's experience with these high-profile cases made him a particularly valuable member of the safety board.

Inman's Emotional Statement

In his public statement, Inman reflected on his challenging work, saying that having been the board member on scene "for two of the largest aviation incidents in the past two decades, working with all of the impacted families and first responders has made me appreciate how the original mission of the NTSB is more crucial now than ever before."

He acknowledged the personal toll of this work, stating: "Witnessing these horrible accidents have undoubtedly taken a toll on me and my family and has changed my perspective in a positive way on how we regulate safety for the traveling public."

Inman praised the NTSB staff and investigators as "world class" professionals dedicated to their safety mission. He concluded with a pointed message: "My only hope is that the NTSB leadership and those who control it stay true to its roots and culture as the preeminent safety organization unimpeded by political or personal agendas."

This statement appears to directly address concerns about potential political interference in what has traditionally been a non-partisan safety agency focused solely on accident investigation and prevention recommendations.
