Emergency services have been called after reports that a train has hit a vehicle near Martin Lane in Burscough, West Lancashire. Images shared online show a Northern train stopped next to green fields, with several ambulances and a fire engine at the scene. It is not yet clear whether there have been any casualties or injuries.
Lines blocked between Wigan Wallgate and Southport
Posting on X, Northern said: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident Wigan Wallgate - Southport all lines are blocked. Please note that other train operators may also be affected by disruption – please check your whole journey before travelling."
The incident appears to have taken place near Martin Lane in Burscough, close to its junction with Whitehouse Lane. Lancashire Police have been approached for further information.
Ticket restrictions lifted and alternative routes
Northern has lifted ticket restrictions in the affected areas, including Advance and Peak restrictions, during the disruption. Restrictions will be reinstated once the disruption ends.
Alternative services have been suggested by Northern. Passengers can travel on the following operators and routes at no extra cost: Bee Network buses between Wigan and Appley Bridge on the 635 bus; Merseyrail services between Southport and Liverpool Central; Merseyrail services between Ormskirk and Liverpool Central; and Merseyrail services between Headbolt Lane and Liverpool Central.
