A man has been critically injured after a tractor fell from a bridge on to the M20 motorway in Kent. The incident occurred on the A227 overbridge near Wrotham at around 11.17am on Monday, when the tractor became separated from its trailer and crashed onto the central reservation between junctions 2 and 3.
Kent police initially believed two vehicles were involved but later confirmed it was a single-vehicle collision. The driver was airlifted to King’s College Hospital in London, where he remains in a critical but stable condition. His next of kin have been informed.
Emergency services, including Kent Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service, attended the scene. The ambulance service said it received reports of a collision involving a tractor and a lorry at about 11.20am, and dispatched multiple crews, a critical care paramedic, and the local air ambulance.
The M20 remains closed in both directions between junctions 1 and 3, while the A227 is also shut. National Highways said the motorway is expected to be closed into Monday evening for emergency repairs and resurfacing following the collision and a fuel spillage. Large queues formed on both sides of the bridge, and motorists have been advised to seek alternative routes.
