An investigation has been launched after three schoolboys fell from the top deck window of a double-decker bus in Wigan. The incident occurred on Bolton Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, at around 3.50pm on 7 January, with emergency services called to the scene.
The boys, two aged 13 and one aged 14, were taken to hospital and remain there, though their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Greater Manchester Police initially stated the trio were leaning against a window when the bus made an emergency stop, but later clarified that the vehicle was stationary when they fell.
Footage of the incident shows the boys spilling from a side window on the upper deck of the blue 950 service before it begins moving. A silver car behind the bus is seen slowly manoeuvring to avoid the bodies on the road.
The boys are pupils at St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School. Headteacher Mark Dumican said in a letter to parents that the school is in contact with the boys and is offering support to their families.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said the fall 'appeared to be linked to some disturbance on the upper deck' and confirmed the bus was not a Bee Network branded service. Transport for Greater Manchester's Interim Network Director for Bus, Alison Chew, said the safety of passengers is paramount and that they are working with the operator to establish the full facts.
A spokesperson for Vision Bus, the Bolton-based operator, said: 'The safety and wellbeing of all passengers remain the highest priority for everyone at Vision Bus, and we wish a speedy recovery to those involved in this incident.' They added that the company is fully cooperating with police investigations.
