Engineering Marvel with a Steep Reputation
Renowned for its unusually steep incline and narrow lanes, the Rainbow Bridge presents a formidable drive for those crossing between Jefferson and Orange counties. Its design includes a high arch with a vertical clearance of 177 feet, a feature implemented to prevent interference with shipping traffic in the area. Since 1997, the bridge has operated exclusively as a one-way westbound route, adding to its unique character.
Extensive Maintenance Works Completed
In March of last year, the bridge was closed for major structural repairs, with a contract worth $10.9 million (approximately £8.03 million) awarded to Florida-based firm Southern Road and Bridge. The renovation involved a full-depth concrete deck restoration, repairs to steel railings, and the replacement of 1,200 rivets and four steel member pins.
During the closure, motorists were redirected to the nearby Veterans Memorial Bridge, which was temporarily adapted to handle the shifted traffic patterns. The Texas Department of Transportation announced the completion of these works via a social media post on March 26, followed by a thorough inspection to ensure the bridge's readiness for public use.
