British holidaymakers have been reassured by major airlines that summer getaways will proceed as planned, despite rising jet fuel prices linked to tensions in Iran. EasyJet and Jet2 have confirmed no fuel supply issues or additional charges for existing bookings.
EasyJet chief executive Kenton Jarvis stated on BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the airline has seen no fuel supply problems at any UK or European airports. Jet2 echoed this, with CEO Steve Heapy expressing confidence after positive updates from suppliers.
However, the aviation industry warns of higher ticket prices later in the year. International Air Transport Association director general Willie Walsh said rising oil costs will inevitably be passed to passengers. Data from Cirium shows 296 UK airport departures were cancelled in May, but June, July, and August schedules show minimal reductions.
Some airlines have confirmed fare increases or cancellations. Air France-KLM plans to raise long-haul fares by £43 per round trip, and KLM has cancelled over 150 European flights. British Airways owner IAG expects an extra £1.72bn in fuel costs and is considering pricing adjustments. Lufthansa will cancel 20,000 flights over six months to save fuel.
Travel expert Simon Calder reassured passengers that BA will not demand extra cash, and airlines can only charge what the market allows. Governments are preparing contingency measures, including relaxing slot rules at airports to prevent airlines from losing take-off and landing rights if fuel shortages occur.
