Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport, the second busiest in northern Spain, has closed for five weeks due to runway resurfacing. The airport, serving 3.2 million passengers annually, shut on 23 April and will reopen on 27 May. During this period, no takeoffs or landings will occur.
The closure affects major airlines including Vueling, Ryanair and Iberia, which operate 30 flights weekly from the UK. With an average of 180 passengers per flight, over 5,000 British travellers are expected to be impacted. The airport advises affected customers to contact their airlines for rebooking or schedule changes.
Alternative airports are available. A Coruña (Alvedro) airport is a 50-minute drive away, offering some international routes. Vigo airport, further south, is another option. Flights from London Heathrow to Alvedro start at £189, while Luton to Vigo is available from £141.
Galicia, often called the 'Cornwall of Spain', remains a popular summer destination for Brits. Attractions include the city of Santiago de Compostela, the Cíes Islands and Rodas Beach, one of the world's top 50 beaches. Despite the airport closure, the region continues to be accessible via nearby airports.
