Federal highway police provided crucial context, revealing that the bus was transporting farm workers from the northeastern state of Maranhao to the southern state of Santa Catarina for seasonal apple harvesting duties.

Previous Bus Accident in November
In November of last year, a separate bus incident on Sao Paulo's main highway resulted in 13 injuries after the vehicle's braking system failed catastrophically. The driver lost control, colliding with nine other vehicles in a chain-reaction accident.
Disturbing CCTV footage from both inside and outside the crowded bus captured the moment of impact, showing the vehicle striking the roadside barrier before careening into multiple cars. Passengers were violently thrown about the cabin before being evacuated by the driver.
CNN Brazil reported that mechanical failure in the braking system prevented the driver from stopping the bus. An official investigation into that November incident remains ongoing.
Recent Transportation Tragedies in Brazil
This latest bus crash follows another transportation disaster that occurred in June, when eight people perished after a hot-air balloon caught fire and plummeted from the sky in southern Brazil's Santa Catarina state.
Thirteen additional individuals, including the pilot, sustained injuries during that morning incident. Local news outlet G1 shared alarming footage showing billowing smoke emanating from the flaming balloon as it descended rapidly before crashing in a rural area adjacent to a health centre.
The consecutive transportation accidents highlight ongoing safety concerns within Brazil's transit systems, particularly regarding long-distance passenger vehicles carrying workers between states for agricultural employment opportunities.
