RCT Council's Treherbert-Treorchy route consultation begins

Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council has opened a public consultation on the second and third phases of a new walking and cycling route linking Treherbert and Treorchy. The three-week consultation runs from July 7 to July 21, 2026, focusing on proposals from Penyrenglyn Primary School towards Treorchy.

What the phases involve

Phase one, which runs from Treherbert Railway Station to Penyrenglyn Primary School, was consulted on last summer. Its detailed design is complete, and the council is awaiting a funding decision from the Welsh Government for construction. That phase was supported by the Active Travel Fund for 2025-26.

Phases two and three are in early design and development stages. They propose new walking and cycling infrastructure from Penyrenglyn Primary School to River Terrace, continuing along River Terrace toward Treorchy. The route will run broadly parallel to the existing railway line.

Funding and next steps

The design work for phases two and three is funded through the Welsh Government's Cardiff Capital Region Regional Transport Fund for 2026-27. Future construction depends on a successful further funding submission.
