Mezze at The Farmers Arms, a popular village pub in St Brides Major, Vale of Glamorgan, will close permanently on Sunday, September 6, after its owners said they had made 'the difficult decision' to shut. The pub, known locally as "the pub on the pond", reopened in April 2019 following a full closure and refurbishment.
Owners announce closure on Facebook
On Tuesday, August 25, the pub wrote on Facebook: "After much thought, we have made the difficult decision that Mezze at The Farmers Arms will close its doors on Sunday, September 6.
"From the beginning our hope was simple – to keep a village pub alive, bring people together, serve good food, and create a place where friends, families, and neighbours could enjoy time together."
"We gave it everything we could and although the time has come for us to move on we want to look back with pride, gratitude, and lots of happy memories rather than sadness," the statement continued.
Community support and final days
The pub thanked everyone who had visited for a drink, meal, or party, adding: "Your support and friendship have meant more to us than you know." They also expressed gratitude to the local community, saying: "Most of all thank you to the wonderful local community for welcoming and supporting us along the way. We may be closing this chapter but we are doing so with smiles, wonderful memories.
"We'll be here until September 6 so please come and see us, raise a glass, and help us make our final days at The Farmers Arms ones to remember."
The pub, which serves Turkish mezze dishes alongside traditional pub fare, is currently listed for sale on Rightmove at £395,000. The listing describes a stone-built two-storey property with a pitched roof, a bar area for 20 people, dining space for 60, and outdoor seating for 25. It also includes a three-bedroom first-floor flat with a reception room, toilet, bathroom, and kitchen.
Pubgoers react to news
Following the announcement, pubgoers expressed their disappointment in comments. One person said she was "truly heartbroken" when she read the post. Leighton Hockin wrote: "I'm so sad to hear this –. always had a truly warm welcome and lovely meals here and the Farmers Arms open mic night on a Wednesday is fantastic. Such a shame! Whatever is the next chapter in your lives, good luck."
Rhian Jones commented: "We've always absolutely loved your food and the welcome we have every single time we have come. The dogs love it too especially the lamb! Sad that we won't be able to have our Turkish fix locally anymore – such great food. We'll definitely pop in before you leave." Another person added: "Absolutely devastated to hear this, we really look forward to our visits to your pub. Food is amazing and all the staff are so friendly, going to miss your place immensely."
