A 65-year-old train inspector in Callao, Peru, is in intensive care after being dragged under a train while rescuing a 14-year-old girl who had fallen onto the tracks. Narciso Mimbela Rosas suffered fractured ribs and multiple head injuries in the incident on Tuesday.
According to his son, Mimbela was waiting for a colleague when he saw the girl crossing the tracks dangerously close to an oncoming train. He jumped down to pull her to safety, but her vest became caught on the train, dragging him along the tracks.
His son told local media: 'When he took the little girl out, he didn't notice that her vest got caught on the train, and that's what dragged him.' He added that his father is conscious but remains under observation, and that reports he was wearing headphones at the time are false.
Police and station security have launched an investigation, and the train driver has been taken to a local police station to provide a statement. The girl's condition has not been reported.
