RAC Urges Drivers to Carry Emergency Kit During 40C UK Heatwave
RAC: Carry Emergency Kit in 40C UK Heatwave

The RAC has urged drivers to carry an emergency breakdown pack to avoid "extremely dangerous" situations as a historic heatwave sends temperatures soaring across the UK this week. The warning comes as a massive "heat-dome" settles over western Europe, threatening to push temperatures up to an unprecedented 40°C by Wednesday (24 June). If reached, the blistering weather will surpass the previous June record set in Hampshire in 1976.

Red Weather Warning Issued

The Met Office has already issued a rare red weather warning for heat, covering a vast area from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham, active from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday (25 June). An amber heat health alert is in place for Greater Manchester.

The breakdown assistance provider revealed that its patrols are already under immense pressure, dealing with 10% more breakdowns than they would normally experience on a typical summer day. Experts predict that emergency calls will increase significantly as the mercury continues to climb.

Essential Items for Motorists

RAC breakdown spokesperson Simon Williams emphasised the gravity of the situation. "Carrying an emergency kit in case of getting stuck at the side of the road is essential," he explained. "It’s also common in such high temperatures for tyre pressures to increase significantly, triggering dashboard warning lights."

Mr Williams added: "We urge drivers not to deflate tyres as this is likely to lead to having too little pressure the next morning when it’s cooler."

To ensure motorist safety during roadside emergencies, the RAC advises keeping the following four items in your vehicle:

  • Water: To maintain hydration for passengers and drivers alike during prolonged delays.
  • Sunscreen: Essential for preventing severe sunburn if forced to wait outside a disabled vehicle.
  • Large umbrella: Providing instant, portable shade from intense, direct sunlight at the roadside.
  • Portable battery pack: Ensuring mobile phones remain fully charged to maintain a vital lifeline to emergency services.

Impact of the Heatwave

The extreme heatwave can make commuting much more dangerous, with the RAC warning that breakdowns are more likely due to overheating engines and tyre issues. The red warning indicates a danger to life, with the Met Office advising people to avoid travel during the hottest parts of the day. Motorists are urged to plan journeys carefully, carry plenty of water, and check their vehicles before setting out.
