Pubs across England and Wales will be allowed to remain open until 5am for the England vs Mexico World Cup match on Monday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced. The Three Lions face Mexico at 1am UK time at the Azteca Stadium, following a 2-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo secured by a Harry Kane double.
Government Reverses Earlier Decision
The government initially only extended pub opening hours until 2am for England matches during the World Cup. However, MPs called for further leeway, as the Mexico match will not finish until after the previous extended hours provision. The Prime Minister responded to these calls, confirming the later closing time.
Sir Keir Starmer said: "Football might be coming home but we're making sure fans don't have to. Pubs staying open till the final whistle is good news for supporters and good news for the pubs and venues that bring our communities together. The whole country will be backing the team. Come on England!"
Tuchel Encourages Children to Watch
England manager Thomas Tuchel has also urged children to stay up late and watch the match. When asked if the Prime Minister supports this, a Downing Street spokeswoman said: "Parents will make their own decision on that."
She added: "We want everyone to enjoy the game but kids should be in school on Monday. The PM has his usual packed schedule on Monday, so he’ll be facing the same dilemma as everyone else on whether to stay up. Win or lose, I think millions of England supporters will be at work on Monday, and the PM will be doing the same."
