The 22-year-old Fredrikstad star, valued between £2.5 million and £4.2 million, has attracted interest from several Championship clubs, but Portsmouth are now considered the "hottest option" for his signature.
Cardiff's Interest Played Down
While Norwegian outlet Fredrikstad Blad reported that Cardiff and Millwall had shown interest in Shein, sources at WalesOnline have downplayed the Bluebirds' pursuit. It is understood that Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy is prioritising a physically-imposing midfielder this summer, and Shein does not fit that profile. The club's supposed interest was described as "wide of the mark."
Shein's Profile and Stats
Shein, who stands at 6ft 1in, is primarily a central midfielder but can also operate as a playmaker or on the wing. He joined Fredrikstad from Dutch club Dordrecht last year, having previously played for Utrecht and Flora Tallinn in his native Estonia. This season, he has scored two goals and provided two assists in 11 Eliteserien appearances, following a debut campaign with one goal and six assists in 28 matches. He has also established himself as an Estonia international.
Portsmouth's Position
According to Fredrikstad Blad, Portsmouth are now leading the race for Shein, with Cardiff's interest having already been played down before these latest developments. The Bluebirds are preparing for their League One campaign under Barry-Murphy, who is expected to make several signings. Priority positions include central midfield, left-back, wing, and striker, with the club likely to make more than four additions as they aim to strengthen for their return to the Championship.
