A date has been set for when Portland Street in Manchester city centre could reopen after a burst water main caused disruption. The road is closed in both directions between Sackville Street and Minshull Street until 3rd November, with a diversion in place for 22 bus routes.
The update came as roadworks are set to progress across Greater Manchester next week. Roadworks can be carried out for a number of reasons, including changes being made to a road, emergency repairs, as well as work by utility companies.
Impact of roadworks on travel
A 2025 parliamentary transport committee report said: “They can also be a source of frustration for anyone trying to get around on roads and pavements by causing congestion and delays that harm the economy, disrupt transport services and limit access to high streets and businesses.”

In Bolton, temporary traffic lights are in place on A6172 Great Moor Street near Soho Street until 16:00 on 23rd April 2027, and on A575 Manchester Road at Smiths Road until 21st December. A58 Wigan Road at Wearish Lane has temporary traffic lights until 30th October, and A673 Topp Way at B6206 Higher Bridge Street has a lane closed until 30th November.
On B6199 Plodder Lane, temporary traffic lights due to electricity work are in place between Slack Fold Lane and Smethurst Lane until 1st November. Gas main work on B6472 Darwen Road between Arnold Road and Fairfields will see temporary traffic lights until 1st November, and water main work on B6472 Darwen Road at Wesley Street continues until 30th October.
In Bury, emergency repairs and gas main work on A676 Bolton Road West at Cunliffe Avenue will see temporary traffic lights until 2nd November. Water main work on B6222 Rochdale Old Road at Castle Hill Road will see temporary traffic lights until 20:00 on 1st November.
In Manchester, roadworks on A5145 Barlow Moor Road from York Road to Sandy Lane will see temporary traffic lights until 16:00 on 13th November. A6010 Alan Turing Way Northbound is closed from A635 Ashton Old Road to Wilson Street until 4th December. B5219 Moss Lane East is closed due to electricity work between Heald Grove and B5117 Oxford Road until 1st November. Turing Close is permanently closed with a new road layout from Turing Court to Mill Street until 0:59 on 6th May 2029. Roadworks on B5167 Wythenshawe Road at Sledmoor Road will see temporary traffic lights until 11th November.
In Oldham, A62 Manchester Street Eastbound is closed due to water main work from Tattersall Street to A627 Oldham Way until 30th October. A671 Rochdale Road Northbound is closed due to roadworks from B6195 Middleton Road to Radcliffe Street until 29th January 2027. Temporary traffic lights are in place on B6195 Middleton Road between Shepherd Street and A671 Rochdale Road, and at High Street, until 29th January 2027.
In Rochdale, water main work on A576 Manchester Old Road at Silburn Way will see temporary traffic lights until 30th October, and on A680 Edenfield Road at Meadow Head Lane until 2nd November. Electricity work on B6225 Hollingworth Road from Rakewood Road to Inghams Lane will see temporary traffic lights until 1st November.
In Salford, roadworks on A5066 Ordsall Lane at Taylorson Street South will see temporary traffic lights until 8th January 2027. A34 New Bailey Street has roadworks and a contraflow at Gore Street until 0:00 on 18th May 2027. Water main work on A6 Manchester Road between The Westlands and Bridgewater Road will see temporary traffic lights until 13th November. East Ordsall Lane is closed due to a new road layout between Lockgate Square and Clermont Way until 0:59 on 21st July 2027. Roadworks on A6 Manchester Road West between A5082 Cleggs Lane and Peel Lane will see temporary traffic lights until 15th November.
In Stockport, gas main work on A5102 Bramhall Lane South between Grasmere Crescent and Ramsdale Road will see temporary traffic lights until 6th November. Emergency repairs and gas main work on A5149 Wilmslow Road at Grange Park Road will see temporary traffic lights until 2nd November. Water main work on A6017 Ashton Road between Cromwell Road and Lingard Lane will see temporary traffic lights until 18:00 on 1st November. Gas main work on A6 Wellington Road South between Mersey Square and Union Street will see temporary traffic lights until 18th November. In Tameside, one lane is closed due to long-term roadworks on A57 Mottram Moor Eastbound from Stalybridge Road to A6018 Back Moor until 31st December 2027. Roadworks on A6018 Mottram Road between Gallowsclough Road and Hobson Moor Road will see temporary traffic lights until 6:00 on 9th November. B6170 Bennett Street in Hyde is closed due to water main work from Talbot Road to Bagshaw Street until 3rd November.
In Trafford, roadworks on A5082 Hough Lane between A577 Sale Lane and Guided Busway will see temporary traffic lights until 30th November, and on A577 Sale Lane at A5082 Hough Lane until 30th November.
In Wigan, A58 Gerard Street Southbound is closed due to roadworks from A5062 Wigan Road to A49 Bryn Street until 22nd November. Temporary traffic lights are in place on A58 Liverpool Road at St Oswalds Road until 17:00 on 26th November, on A571 Billinge Road between Tunstall Lane and Enfield Street until 16:00 on 11th November, and on A572 Newton Road at Highfield Lane until 30th October.
