A pilot has died after a light aircraft crashed into a field near Summerley Airfield in Derbyshire. The incident occurred at around 1pm today in the village of Apperknowle, Dronfield.
Emergency services were called to Summerley Road following reports of the crash. The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, died from his injuries, Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed just before 6pm.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has sent a team to the site to investigate the cause of the crash. Roads in the area remain closed, and police have urged anyone with information to call 101.
Eyewitnesses reported a heavy emergency services presence in the village, according to the Derbyshire Times. The small airfield, consisting of a single grass runway on a ridge of high ground, lies east of Dronfield near Apperknowle and Coal Aston.
