A campaign to improve safety on the A1 in Northumberland has gained more than 1,000 signatures in its first week. The initiative, launched by The Chronicle and The Journal following a series of fatal accidents, calls for the road to be dualled to reduce risks.
Petition Gains Momentum
An online petition supporting the dualling of the A1 has received over 1,000 signatures in less than a week, reflecting strong public concern about the road's dangers. Signatories highlighted the A1's poor safety record, which has seen more than 50 fatalities in Northumberland over the past 20 years.
Recent Tragedies Spark Coalition
A recent spate of accidents, resulting in six deaths in three separate incidents within weeks, has prompted a coalition of political, business, and community leaders to demand action. Politicians from Labour, the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Greens, and independents have all backed the campaign.
Following these incidents, Northumberland County Council leader Glen Sanderson and North East mayor Kim McGuinness wrote to the Government, urging a rethink on its decision to scrap dualling plans. They described the recent fatal accidents as “tragic and totally unacceptable” and argued that smaller safety schemes are insufficient.
Economic Factors Add Pressure
The growth of Northumberland's tourism sector, along with the booming offshore energy industry at Blyth and a data centre being built at Cambois, has increased the need for better infrastructure. The road's shortcomings also impact other parts of the county, as many villages suffer heavy traffic when the A1 is blocked, serving as “rat runs”.
Government Policy Under Scrutiny
The current Government scrapped dualling plans in 2024, citing poor value for money. The previous Government had expressed support for dualling but failed to implement it during 14 years in power.
One petition signatory commented: “I have used this road for over 60 years. I have seen several improvements, but it is vital that this last step is taken without further delay. Not only is the single carriageway a danger in itself, but it encourages cars to race on the last section of dual carriageway to reach the single section ahead of slow moving vehicles.”
Another said: “This will save lives and ensure safer journeys. There are more spin offs for tourism and commerce which is a win-win outcome for all.”
A third added: “Please dual the A1 as soon as possible. It is a very dangerous stretch of road and is the main link between London and Edinburgh. Saving lives is more important than saving money.”
Campaign's Core Message
The petition states: “The A1 in Northumberland has an appalling safety record that has resulted in six tragic fatalities in just a few weeks. The mix of single and double-carriageway stretches is a major contributory factor to the high level of accidents. That has a terrible human toll and is also holding back the area’s economy as Northumberland looks to grow its tourism, renewable energy and digital sectors. We appeal to the Government to urgently re-examine the case for dualling the A1 in Northumberland. This has been a long-standing issue, but recent tragedies have made it more urgent than ever.”
