One person has been taken to hospital following a collision on the A1 near the junction for Metrocentre. The incident occurred shortly after 3.30pm on Monday, 3 August.
Road closures and delays
The A1 southbound and one lane heading northbound were closed following the incident. Drivers experienced long delays, with traffic backed up towards Kingston Park on the A1 southbound and Team Valley on the A1 northbound. Motorists were advised to find alternative routes as delays continued.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 3.40pm today (Monday), we received a report of a collision on the A1 southbound close to the junction for the Metrocentre. Emergency services are in attendance. All lanes of the southbound carriageway are closed while one lane of the northbound carriageway is closed, with diversions currently in place. Motorists should use alternative routes where possible.”
Ambulance response
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A1 near to the Metrocentre shortly after 3.30pm on 3 August. We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, a clinical team leader, a specialist paramedic and one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team. One patient was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital."
