North East road closures and roadworks: full list for week

Drivers in the North East are being warned of a number of road closures and roadworks taking place across the region this week. Some roads are fully closed while others will have lane closures or temporary traffic lights in place.

Newcastle

Temporary traffic lights are in place in Heaton due to gas main work on Heaton Park View in both directions between Tintern Crescent and Heaton Road, until 0:00 on 9th September. Station Road in Newburn is closed in both directions due to gas main work between A6085 High Street and Newburn Bridge Road, until 0:00 on 11th September.

In Shieldfield, temporary traffic lights are active due to gas main work on B1600 Portland Road in both directions around Warwick Street, until 14th September. On A193 Shields Road, temporary traffic lights are in place in both directions at Stotts Road, with delays expected until 0:00 on 18th September.

Water main work on White Street in Walker has brought temporary traffic lights in both directions at Fisher Street, until 0:00 on 27th September. In Heaton, gas main work on Heaton Road in both directions at Heaton Park View means temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 7th October.

Market Street Eastbound is closed due to roadworks from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Street, until 9th October. Pilgrim Street Southbound is closed due to roadworks from New Bridge Street West to Swan House Roundabout, until 9th October 2026.

Temporary traffic lights are in place on B1311 Gallowgate in both directions at Strawberry Lane, until 27th February 2027. Pottery Lane is closed in both directions due to roadworks from B1600 Forth Banks to Shot Factory Lane, until 17:00 on 31st March 2027.

Worswick Street One Way Street is closed due to roadworks from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Square, until 0:59 on 10th April 2027. Whitehouse Road in Scotswood is closed in both directions due to roadworks between Armstrong Road / Whitehouse Road and Walwick Fell, until 0:59 on 18th July 2027.

A lane is closed with a speed restriction of 30 mph and narrow lanes due to roadworks on A167 Tyne Bridge in both directions from A167 (Newcastle) to Church Street (Gateshead), with delays expected until 0:59 on 16th June 2028.

Gateshead

Temporary traffic lights are in place due to gas main work on Easedale Gardens in both directions between Harlow Green Lane and Wetheral Gardens, until 0:00 on 29th September. On A194 Leam Lane, a lane is closed with temporary traffic lights in both directions between B1306 Mill Lane and A194(M) J3 White Mare Pool Roundabout, with delays expected between 19:40 and 6:00 Mondays to Sundays until 6:00 on 10th September.

High Street Southbound is closed due to roadworks from Nuns Lane to the A184, until 6:00 on 25th September. In Birtley, temporary traffic lights are in place on A167 Durham Road in both directions between Windsor Road and Devon Crescent, until 0:00 on 28th September.

Nelson Street is closed in both directions due to roadworks between Swinburne Place and Lambton Street, until 17:30 on 2nd October. Temporary traffic lights are active on B6317 Whickham Highway in both directions between Dunston Bank (Dunston Hill) and Knightside Gardens (Lobley Hill), until 17:00 on 4th November.

A167 Gateshead Highway in both directions is closed due to major works to demolish the flyover between B1426 High Street West and Hawks Road / Lambton Street, until 0:59 on 18th May 2027.

North Tyneside

Temporary traffic lights are in place due to gas main work on Monkseaton Front Street in both directions at Cauldwell Lane, with delays expected until 28th October. At Murton, electricity work on A191 Rake Lane in both directions between A192 Preston North Road (Foxhunters Roundabout) and Barnstaple Road means temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 11th September.

In Monkseaton, gas main work on Cauldwell Lane in both directions between Crawford Place and Front Street has brought temporary traffic lights until 18th September. One lane is closed in Preston due to junction improvements on A192 Preston North Road Northbound from A1058 Beach Road to Hartburn Road (Morrisons), upgrading the footpath and crossings, until 15:30 on 10th November 2026.

Pottery Lane is closed in both directions due to roadworks from B1600 Forth Banks to Shot Factory Lane, until 17:00 on 31st March 2027. In Killingworth, temporary traffic lights are in place on B1317 Killingworth Lane in both directions near Simonside Way, until 22nd September 2027.

South Tyneside

Cheviot Road in both directions is closed due to roadworks from Hemsley Road to Bamburgh Avenue, until 17:00 on 10th September. Inverness Road in both directions is closed due to roadworks between Perth Avenue and Iona Road, until 17:00 on 8th September.

In Boldon Colliery, temporary traffic lights are active on B1298 Abingdon Way in both directions between Witney Way and A184 Newcastle Road, with delays expected until 17:00 on 18th December. Temporary traffic lights are also in place on Didcot Way in both directions at B1298 Abingdon Way, until 17:00 on 18th December.

Northumberland

Temporary traffic lights are in place at Newton due to water main work on B6309 in both directions at the A69, with delays expected until 0:00 on 8th September. At Blyth, water main work on B1327 Plessey Road in both directions at William Street means temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 9th September.

Roadworks on B6278 in both directions between the A68 (Carterway Heads) and the B6306 (Edmundbyers) have brought temporary traffic lights until 17:00 on 9th September. At Mickley, emergency repairs and gas main work on Riding Dene in both directions at A695 means temporary traffic lights with delays expected until 10th September.

At Painshawfield, water main work on The A695 in both directions near Branch End has brought temporary traffic lights with delays expected until 0:00 on 11th September. At Amble, emergency repairs and gas main work on A1068 in both directions at Gloster Hill means temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 11th September.

In Milbourne, water main work on A696 in both directions between Kirkley March turn off and The Highlander Bar has brought temporary traffic lights with delays expected until 0:00 on 14th September. At Morpeth, roadworks on Coopie's Lane in both directions between Salisbury Street and A192 Shields Road mean temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 18th September.

In Ponteland, gas main work on A696 Cheviot View in both directions between B6545 Rotary Way and Cecil Court has brought temporary traffic lights with delays expected until 0:00 on 25th September. At Cornriggs, electricity work on The B6295 in both directions between Cross Lane (Cornriggs) and Dudley Place (Allenheads) means temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 6th October.

Hallstile Bank Northbound is closed due to roadworks from Hallgate to Haugh Lane, until 31st October. Traffic is taking turns due to roadworks on Moorland Avenue in both directions between Moorland Crescent and Moorland Drive, until 13th November.

B6321 at Corbridge is closed in both directions due to roadworks between the B6259 (Corbridge) and the A695 (Dilston), until 17:00 on 22nd December. At East Sleekburn, roadworks on Sandfield Road in both directions at Harbour View mean temporary traffic lights until 22nd January 2027.

Sunderland

A lane is closed in Houghton-le-Spring due to gas main work on B1260 Gillas Lane West in both directions between Durham Road and A182 Hetton Road, until 17:00 on 13th October. Mowbray Road in Sunderland is closed in both directions due to roadworks between Salem Street South and Suffolk Street, until 31st December. Easington Street in Sunderland is closed in both directions due to roadworks between Millennium Way and Hay Street, until 9th January 2029.

County Durham

Temporary traffic lights are in place in Coxhoe due to electricity work on Commercial Road East in both directions at Prospect Place, until 0:00 on 9th September. Traffic is taking turns in Ushaw Moor due to electricity work on Maple Park in both directions at Broom Crescent, until 0:00 on 10th September. In Brandon, electricity work on Frensham Way in both directions at Chalfont Way means traffic is taking turns until 0:00 on 10th September.

Emergency repairs and gas main work on A694 in both directions from Spa Drive (Shotley Bridge) to East Law (Ebchester) have brought temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 14th September. Telecoms work on The road in both directions between Dragon Lane and Goldsborough Road means temporary traffic lights until 0:59 on 14th September.

In Meadowfield, roadworks on A690 High Street North in both directions between Meadow Rise and Lobley Hill Road have brought temporary traffic lights with delays expected until 0:00 on 18th September. Roadworks on A167 Durham Road in both directions between Windsor Road and Devon Crescent mean temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 28th September.

In South Pelaw, gas main work on The Avenue in both directions between Eleventh Avenue (South Pelaw) and The Crescent (Chester le Street) has brought temporary traffic lights until 17:00 on 1st October. In Stanley, water main work on Hustledown Road in both directions between West Ousterley Road and Parmeter Street means temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 16th October.

In Edmundbyers, water main work on B6306 in both directions between Pow Hill Country Park (Edmundbyers) and Park Bank (Blanchland) has brought temporary traffic lights until 2nd November. In Dawdon, gas main work on Heathway in both directions between Fern Crescent and Parkside Crescent means temporary traffic lights until 17:00 on 10th November.

Narrow lanes are in place in Durham on Framwelgate Waterside in both directions from Sidegate to Millburngate, until 31st December 2027.
