New Gibraltar Border Rules: Brits Face Dual Checks from July 15
New Gibraltar Border Rules: Dual Checks from July 15

New Border Checks at Gibraltar Airport from July 15

British tourists visiting Gibraltar must now undergo two sets of immigration checks upon arrival at Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport, as part of a post-Brexit agreement that came into force on July 15, 2026. The UK-EU deal creates an open land border between Gibraltar and Spain, effectively making Gibraltar part of Europe's passport-free Schengen Zone, with the removal of checkpoints and border fences.

Dual Checks for Entry into Gibraltar and Schengen

On arrival, Brits will first be processed by Gibraltar authorities for entry into the territory, followed by Spanish authorities for Schengen Area entry. This includes registration under the Entry/Exit System (EES) where applicable. According to travel journalist Simon Calder, reporting for The Telegraph, the new rules mean that British passport holders will be checked by Spanish passport officials to ensure their passports meet the strict rules on expiry and issue dates.

Passport Requirements and 90-Day Limit

Under the updated rules, a full UK passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years and be valid for at least three months after the intended departure from Gibraltar or the Schengen Area. Time spent in Gibraltar now counts toward the Schengen Area’s 90-day limit within any 180-day period. British-Irish dual nationals traveling on an Irish passport are treated as EU citizens and exempt from the 90-day limit, EES, and ETIAS.

One Upside: Direct Travel into Spain

Despite the stricter controls, Calder notes an upside: with the dual checks completed at Gibraltar airport, visitors are considered inside the frontier-free zone and can travel straight into Spain without further stops. He said: “From this summer, it gets a bit trickier to reach [Gibraltar] for British passport holders. The British Overseas Territory is not joining the Schengen area, but the effect for UK passport holders is the same. ... With these new checks, there will be an upside. Visitors are considered inside the 'frontier free zone' and could travel straight into Spain without stopping again.”

Previous Rules Before July 15

Before July 15, 2026, UK citizens visiting Gibraltar did not have their stay count toward the Schengen Area’s 90-day limit and faced only a single immigration check by Gibraltarian authorities. Passports simply needed to be valid for the duration of the stay. The provisional UK-EU Gibraltar Agreement had not yet taken effect, so Gibraltar operated entirely outside Schengen rules.
