Naples Capodichino Airport in Italy will close for the entire month of November 2026 for major runway upgrades, grounding all flights from UK airports including Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh.
EasyJet operates seasonal services between Liverpool and Naples, while Ryanair offers indirect services throughout the year. Skyscanner now shows no flights between Liverpool and Capodichino Airport for the whole month of November, whether direct or indirect.
Airport closure details
The airport's official website states: "Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for extensive and planned runway upgrades, in compliance with stringent industry regulations and in line with GESAC's priority commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards."
Naples is one of Italy's busiest airports, handling around 13 million passengers a year. That figure is projected to rise to 17.3 million by 2035, with a wider modernisation programme planned to accommodate growing demand.
Alternative travel options
Passengers will need to use Salerno-Pontecagnano Airport during the closure. Also known as Salerno Costa d'Amalfi and Cilento Airport, it is linked to Naples by a shuttle bus introduced by airport operator GESAC. The service connects Naples Piazza Garibaldi with the Salerno airport and will run eight times a day in each direction. Tickets cost €12 (£10.04) per passenger. Alternatively, travellers can take a train from Naples Central to Salerno for £5 each way.
Upgrade programme and investment
The wider upgrade programme at Naples includes a second terminal for non-Schengen destinations, including UK routes, as well as additional aircraft parking bays and an expanded cargo and logistics area. Plans also include a new hotel, improved road and underground transport links, and redevelopment of the surrounding area.
According to Le Cronache, management company Gesac has said the investment works will cost €30 million (£25 million). Adr Infrastrutture, which won the tender, will carry them out. The works have been described by Gesac as "radical. They will be carried out without interruption, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The period was chosen because it historically has lower air traffic."
The number of flights impacted by the work has not been disclosed as of October 30. Anyone with a ticket departing or arriving at Naples Airport between November 1 and 30, 2026, should check with their airline before heading to the airport.
