Survey Reveals America's Most and Least Stressful Airports for Travellers
Most and Least Stressful US Airports Revealed in Survey

A comprehensive new survey has unveiled the most and least stressful airports for travellers across the United States, shedding light on the factors that turn air travel into a nerve-racking ordeal. Conducted by Mozio, a ground transportation search and booking platform, the analysis scrutinised the 20 busiest airports in the country, evaluating annoyances such as flight delays, parking expenses, and distances from airports to city centres to determine stress levels.

Chicago O'Hare Tops the Stress List

Emerging as the most stressful airport is Chicago O'Hare International Airport, which garnered a stress score of 8.42 out of 10. According to Mozio, over a quarter of flights, specifically 25.4 percent, experience delays at O'Hare, making delays a frequent part of the travel experience. Additionally, parking costs at this hub are steep, priced at $43 per day, and the drive into the heart of Chicago exceeds an hour, compounding traveller frustrations.

New York City Airports Dominate the Rankings

Chicago is not alone in facing criticism; all three major airports in the New York City area have secured top positions on the stress list. LaGuardia Airport in Queens ranks as the second most stressful, with a score of 7.54 out of 10. It stands out for its exorbitant parking fees, which can reach $80 daily, and a 26.3 percent delay rate for departing flights. The commute to Midtown Manhattan from LaGuardia also takes nearly an hour, adding to the stress.

John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport share the third-place spot, each receiving a stress score of 7.19 out of 10. While JFK boasts a relatively high on-time departure rate of 78.3 percent within 15 minutes of schedule, it remains stressful due to massive passenger volumes. Parking at JFK costs $70 per day, and the drive to Times Square averages 56 minutes, often longer in heavy traffic. Newark, located in New Jersey, also charges $70 for parking and has a slightly better on-time performance, with 76.2 percent of flights departing on schedule. However, Newark is considered less stressful than its New York counterparts because the commute to Midtown Manhattan is shorter.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul: The Least Stressful Airport

Not every airport induces anxiety; Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport earns the title of the least stressful busy airport, with a remarkably low stress score of 1.76. It reports one of the highest on-time departure rates in the study, with 81.5 percent of flights leaving within 15 minutes of their scheduled time. Parking is affordable at $30 per day, and the drive to the Minnesota State Capitol takes only 20 minutes, offering a smoother travel experience.

Other Low-Stress Hubs

The study also highlights several other airports that provide a more relaxed journey for travellers. According to Mozio, the least stressful airports include:

  • Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport in Minneapolis
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix
  • San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco
  • Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte

This survey underscores the significant impact of operational factors like delays, parking costs, and commute times on traveller stress, offering valuable insights for those planning their journeys. As air travel continues to evolve, such data can help passengers make informed choices and potentially avoid the most hectic hubs.
