Martin Lewis has advised UK travellers to check their passports now to avoid higher fees that take effect on 8 April. The consumer finance expert warned that standard adult passport applications will rise from £94.50 to £102, while child passports will increase from £61.50 to £66.50.
In an update on the Money Saving Expert website, Mr Lewis urged people to act promptly: "Rising by up to £17.50. 8 April. Check NOW if yours is due for renewal, there's still time to get the lower rate." The advice highlights that applying online remains the cheapest method, with the GOV.UK website the only necessary portal for new, renewal, or child applications.
MSE noted that over seven million Britons saved money last year by applying online. However, the Government cautions that no refund will be issued if an application is cancelled or if the applicant is not entitled to a passport.
Those holding burgundy passports need not rush to replace them, as they remain valid until their expiry date. Blue passports are only issued upon renewal or new applications. Passport processing can take up to three weeks, so early application is advised, with urgent appointments available at passport offices or via the HM Passport Office phone line.
A Home Office statement explained that the fee increase helps move towards a system that meets its costs through users, reducing reliance on general taxation. It stressed that the Government makes no profit from passport application fees, which also cover consular support overseas and border processing for British citizens.
