Trains to Manchester Airport have been cancelled or delayed after a person died on the tracks near Gatley station. British Transport Police were called at around 12.50pm on 23 June following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Emergency services attended, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
Disruption to Services
The train line between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport was blocked as emergency services responded. National Rail confirmed that all lines were closed, causing cancellations and delays for Northern, TransPennine Express, and Transport for Wales services. Disruption is expected to continue until at least 3pm.
Alternative Travel Options
Passengers travelling to Manchester Airport have been offered alternative services. Northern customers can use TransPennine Express, Avanti West Coast, and Transport for Wales services via any reasonable route at no extra cost. They can also use Metrolink tram services and Bee Network bus services (43, 103, 248, 313, 368, and 50). TransPennine Express customers can use the Metrolink, Northern or alternative TransPennine Express services, and Avanti West Coast services towards Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "We were called to Gatley station at 12.50pm today (23 June) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Officers attended along with paramedics but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
