A significant security breach at Valencia's Manises airport resulted in a major flight delay on Saturday, when a man climbed onto the roof of a Vueling aircraft bound for Amsterdam.
Incident Details and Response
The unidentified individual was seen running across the fuselage of an Airbus A320, causing flight VY8351 to depart two hours and 10 minutes later than scheduled. According to reports from Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, the incident occurred around 6.30pm, with video footage showing the man gesturing and shouting at staff and security workers from the aircraft roof.
Legal and Medical Consequences
Once removed by authorities, the man was admitted to a local hospital due to what the Guardia Civil described as an "altered psychological state." He was also reported for violating the Air Safety Law, an offence that can lead to financial penalties and potential prison sentences. No weapons were found, and there were no injuries reported during the 10-minute episode.
Investigation and Broader Context
Spanish airport operator Aena has launched an internal investigation to determine how the individual accessed the restricted operations area. This incident highlights ongoing security challenges in aviation, reminiscent of a similar event in Germany last November, where two travellers were arrested for trespassing on the tarmac at Cologne Bonn airport after missing their flight.
In that case, the men allegedly smashed an emergency alarm to reach the runway, facing criminal charges for trespassing and potential violations of the Air Security Act. Such breaches underscore the importance of stringent airport security measures to prevent disruptions and ensure passenger safety.
Flight VY8351 eventually departed for Amsterdam at approximately 8.45pm, but the delay has raised questions about airport protocols and response times in handling such unexpected events.
