Manchester City midfielder Charlie Gray is set to join League One side Wigan Athletic on loan, with a deal close to taking the 20-year-old to the Brick Community Stadium.
Gray’s debut and new contract
Gray made his first team debut for City last season, coming off the bench in the League Cup win over Brentford last December, and signed a new contract at the Etihad in the summer.
He watched Wigan's EFL Trophy game against Aston Villa on Tuesday night and was absent from the City Under-21s squad for their win at Mansfield in the same competition on Wednesday.
Loan move details
The highly-rated Gray is set to complete his move to Wigan in the coming days on a season-long loan move and could make his debut for the Latics in their League One clash with Leyton Orient on Saturday.
Gray joined City as an under-nine and has won the FA Youth Cup and the Premier League 2 title during his time in the academy.
Further academy moves expected
City are likely to conclude several more academy moves in the final weeks of the transfer window with several other youngsters earmarked for loans away from the Etihad to continue their development.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Max Chabot has completed his move to the Blues having been on trial with the club during the summer. The 18-year-old has moved from French club Angers and played the full 90 minutes for Oli Reiss' Under-21s in the 4-1 win at Mansfield on Wednesday night.
The towering teenager impressed against League One opponents, making several fine saves and only being denied a debut clean sheet by a late consolation strike for the hosts.
Chabot joined up with the City first team on their summer tour of Asia as an international trialist with the Blues needing an extra keeper after allowing Oli Whatmuff to join Stockport County on loan. City will now weigh up the short-term future for Chabot and whether to allow him to leave on loan or spend the campaign in house playing academy football.
