Motorists are being warned of more traffic chaos on the M80 near Stirling as the second of five weekend contraflows begins. The emergency roadworks, which caused delays of up to two hours last weekend, are part of a bridge refurbishment project near Haggs.
Contraflow Details
The contraflow measures are in place between junction 6 and junction 9 (Pirnhall junction at Stirling) from 7:30pm each Friday until 6am on Monday. Traffic is restricted to a single lane in both directions with a reduced speed limit of 40mph.
This weekend marks the second of five scheduled closures through June and July. The remaining weekends affected are 26-29 June, 3-6 July, and 10-13 July.
Official Apologies and Advice
David Bishop, BEAR Scotland's South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: "There were significant delays on the route last weekend and we are expecting the contraflow to have an impact on motorists again this weekend." He added that decisions about such essential works are not taken lightly, but the bridge's location near one of Scotland's busiest junctions limits traffic management options.
Bishop advised: "Our advice is to check the latest travel updates, allow extra travel time for journeys, and consider alternative routes during the weekend contraflows."
Why the Works Are Essential
The project to refurbish and re-waterproof the bridge is described as "essential" to avoid future reactive closures. A BEAR Scotland statement said: "Every effort will be made to ensure that the M80 is fully open to traffic each Monday morning at the end of the weekend working."
Works are weather-dependent and may be postponed at short notice. Consultation with emergency services and stakeholders has been carried out in advance.
