A section of the M62 eastbound remains closed this morning after a lorry fire caused extensive damage to the road surface. The closure is in place between junction 7 at St Helens and junction 8 at Burtonwood, following a blaze that engulfed a heavy goods vehicle late last night.
National Highways has confirmed that the vehicle has been recovered, but emergency resurfacing works are required due to the damage caused by the fire. The eastbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for most of the day, while the westbound side has reopened.
In a separate incident on the same motorway, a serious collision involving two lorries occurred at around 4:30am near junction 10 at Croft Interchange. One of the vehicles caught fire, and police have confirmed that one driver died at the scene. The eastbound carriageway is closed for accident investigation and potential resurfacing.
Drivers are advised to check traffic conditions before setting out, as congestion is expected on alternative routes through Winwick and Lowton. Live updates are available from National Highways via their website or customer contact centre.
