The M60 motorway in Greater Manchester was partially shut this morning after a car caught fire during rush hour, causing significant delays for commuters.
Pictures from the scene show the vehicle engulfed in flames on the hard shoulder near the Whitefield exit, just after 7am. Two lanes were closed on the clockwise carriageway between junction 16 for Pendlebury and junction 17 for Prestwich and Whitefield.
Emergency services attended the incident. All lanes have now been reopened, but congestion remains heavy, with queues stretching back to junction 14 for the A580 East Lancashire Road.
Drivers faced lengthy delays as traffic slowed to a crawl approaching the scene. Highways England images show the extent of the congestion and the burnt-out vehicle.
