Severe M25 Crash Triggers Rush Hour Chaos with Five-Mile Queues
Drivers on one of Britain's busiest motorways are facing significant disruption this afternoon following a severe crash on the M25. The incident, occurring between junctions J19 and J20, has been designated as severe by National Highways, resulting in extensive delays and congestion stretching for miles.
Lane Closure and Delays Extend into Evening Rush Hour
The crash has prompted the closure of one lane out of four on the clockwise carriageway between J19 and J20. National Highways has reported that this closure may persist until around 6pm, exacerbating pre-weekend rush hour chaos. Drivers in the affected area are experiencing delays of up to 50 minutes, with traffic conditions not expected to return to normal until between 5.30pm and 5.45pm.
Congestion Builds Across Multiple Junctions
As a result of the incident, congestion has now extended to five miles, with queues stretching from J20 back to J16. National Highways confirmed that delays in this stretch have reached an hour, significantly impacting travel times. Traffic is building steadily from J20 all the way back to J16, following the crash between J19 and J20. Between junctions J16 and J20, drivers are currently facing delays of 40 minutes against expected traffic flow.
The disruption highlights the vulnerability of major transport routes during peak periods, with authorities urging motorists to seek alternative routes or allow extra time for their journeys. Updates on the situation are being closely monitored as recovery efforts continue.
