A multi-vehicle crash on the M60 near Stockport caused severe traffic disruption on Tuesday morning, with delays of up to 90 minutes reported. The incident, which occurred just before rush hour, forced several lanes to close between junctions J27 and J1, leading to five-mile queues.
National Highways confirmed that the scene was cleared by 7.47am, but warned that residual delays of around 60 minutes would persist. Normal traffic conditions were not expected until between 9.15am and 9.30am on 6 May 2025. The agency stated: 'There are resulting delays of 60 minutes however these should begin to ease.'
Live traffic maps from Google showed heavy congestion, marked in dark red, still in place around 8.30am. The M60, also known as the Manchester Outer Ring Road, is one of the busiest motorways in the north of England, with over 125,000 drivers using the section near Stockport daily.
Emergency services, including Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service, attended the scene. The Mirror has approached both for comment. Elsewhere, delays were also reported on the M60 anticlockwise at Junction 15, the M6 Southbound near Warrington, and the A1(M) in Darlington due to separate incidents.
