Severe Traffic Disruption on M1 Near Luton Airport as Overnight Works Cause Major Delays
Drivers on the M1 motorway near Luton Airport are experiencing significant disruptions, with delays of up to 45 minutes reported due to extensive overnight resurfacing works. The closure of three out of four lanes between junction 10, which serves Luton Airport, and junction nine at Dunstable has led to substantial traffic build-ups, creating long queues that are backing up as far as junction 11.
National Highways Issues Warning to Motorists
A spokesperson for National Highways has confirmed the situation, stating, "Three lanes (of four) are closed between J10 (Luton Airport) and J9 (Dunstable) of the M1 due to resurfacing works. Current delays of 45 minutes on approach." The agency has urged drivers to plan ahead, check their routes, and allow extra time for their journeys to mitigate the impact of these delays.
Early Morning Traffic Cameras Capture Growing Queues
Traffic cameras in the area have captured images showing large queues beginning to form in the early hours, highlighting the severity of the congestion near this key travel hub. The resurfacing works, which are part of routine maintenance, have necessitated the lane closures, disrupting the flow of traffic on one of the UK's busiest motorways.
Motorists are advised to consider alternative routes if possible and stay updated on traffic conditions through official channels. The delays are expected to persist until the works are completed, with authorities monitoring the situation closely to manage traffic and minimise further inconvenience.
