London is braced for severe travel disruption after the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) confirmed a full-scale 48-hour walkout on the Tube network.
The strike is set to bring the entire London Underground system to a standstill on Monday, 8th April and Tuesday, 9th April. The industrial action is a major escalation in an ongoing dispute over pay, working conditions, and what the union describes as "attacks on pensions".
Complete Shutdown Expected
The RMT has stated that the strike action will be comprehensive, effectively shutting down all Tube services. This will cause immense disruption for millions of commuters, tourists, and businesses across the capital.
Transport for London (TfL) is expected to issue severe travel warnings, advising people to work from home if possible or make alternative arrangements. Other transport networks, including buses and roads, are anticipated to be extremely congested.
The Heart of the Dispute
RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch declared that the union will not tolerate the imposition of changes that negatively impact its members' livelihoods. The strike is a direct response to the union's claim that London Underground Limited (LUL) has failed to present a acceptable offer that safeguards jobs, conditions, and the existing pension scheme.
The union is demanding a negotiated settlement that guarantees no detrimental changes to working conditions and provides a fair pay rise that reflects the cost-of-living crisis.
This action signals a significant period of industrial unrest on the transport network, with travellers facing widespread cancellations and delays throughout the proposed strike days.
