Loganair scraps Newcastle-Southampton and Exeter routes
Loganair scraps two Newcastle Airport routes

Loganair has confirmed it has cancelled two of its regular services connecting Newcastle Airport with southern locations amid moves to “support the long-term resilience of the airline”. The Scottish airline says it is scrapping flights between Newcastle Airport and Southampton and Exeter, amid an overhaul of its services.

Only one service remains

The move means the operator now has just one service from Newcastle Airport – from Newcastle to Jersey. However, booking systems on the firm’s website show there are no bookable flights from Newcastle to the largest of the Channel Islands after October 18 until January 10, with the final flight on October 18 going via Southampton.

The company has been asked if this schedule will be updated to add more flights, but has yet to respond. Customers affected by the withdrawal of the Southampton to Newcastle, and Exeter to Newcastle services, are being contacted to discuss their options.

Customer reaction

An unnamed customer told us: “A reorganisation within the company was announced in August that had a potential impact on flights from Southampton to Newcastle however the airline was quick to reassure travellers the route would continue beyond the end of October.

"This decision has now been reversed with less than a fortnight’s notice and the route is being abandoned altogether as well as flights from Newcastle to Exeter, leaving travellers to make alternative plans with not many options. The airline has let people down badly.”

Background and airline statement

Loganair, which started life in 1962 with a single aircraft and is now described as the UK’s largest regional airline, officially began flying from Newcastle in 2019, with flights to Aberdeen as well as to the Norwegian coastal city of Bergen and the Channel Islands destination, Guernsey. The carrier marked its biggest ever programme of flights from Newcastle in 2023, following a significant bounceback following the pandemic that allowed it to offer almost 200,000 seats. However, all three of those destinations were withdrawn over recent years.

A Loganair spokesperson said: “As part of our ongoing network reviews, we can confirm that our Newcastle–Southampton and Newcastle–Exeter services have been cancelled. We continually review our flying programme to ensure our network reflects customer demand and supports the long-term resilience of the airline.

"This enables us to focus our aircraft and resources where they can deliver the greatest benefit for customers and the communities we serve. Customers with affected bookings are being contacted directly with their available options.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and thank customers for their understanding as we continue to strengthen our wider network.”
