Shocking live-stream footage has captured the terrifying moment one of Lisbon's most famous tourist attractions, the Gloria Funicular, malfunctioned and hurled backwards down its track in a chaotic derailment.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, sent panic through the carriage as it abruptly lost power and began a rapid, uncontrolled descent. The sound of screeching metal and screams from passengers filled the air.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on the bustling Calcada da Gloria street. According to local reports, three people sustained injuries in the sudden jolt and were treated at the scene. Fortunately, none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
A Scene of Chaos and Confusion
Eyewitnesses and passengers described a scene of sheer confusion. One moment the historic tram was climbing the steep hill towards the Bairro Alto and São Jorge Castle viewpoints as normal, the next it was lurching violently and sliding backwards.
The live-stream video, which has since circulated widely online, shows the carriage suddenly stopping before momentum takes over, sending it careening down the slope it had just climbed. The operator appeared to be desperately attempting to regain control of the vehicle.
Iconic Tourist Attraction Grounded
The Gloria Funicular, or Elevador da Glória, is one of the city's most beloved and iconic transport links. In operation since 1885, it ferries thousands of tourists and locals daily up the punishingly steep hill between the Baixa district and the garden of São Pedro de Alcântara.
Following the accident, service on the line was immediately suspended. An investigation by the transport operator, Carris, is now underway to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure. Initial reports suggest a problem with the cable car's braking system may be to blame.
The derailment serves as a stark reminder of the challenges of maintaining the city's historic and ageing transport infrastructure, much of which is a major draw for international visitors.
