Jetstar Considers Overhaul of Carry-On Baggage Rules Amid Passenger Complaints
Jetstar May Scrap Weight Limits for Carry-On Luggage

Jetstar is poised for a significant overhaul of its carry-on baggage regulations as passengers continue to face hefty fees of up to $110 under the airline's stringent current policy. The budget carrier currently permits a 7kg carry-on allowance for basic fares, divided between one larger item for the overhead locker and one smaller personal item for under the seat. All carry-on baggage must fit securely within the overhead storage compartments.

Current Fee Structure and Passenger Frustrations

For travellers seeking additional carry-on capacity, purchasing an extra 7kg costs $60 on domestic routes and $85 for international flights. However, penalties escalate sharply at the boarding gate, where exceeding the allowance incurs charges of $85 domestically and $110 internationally. Jetstar's head of network and fleet, Ted Knight, has openly acknowledged this system as a major 'pain point' for customers.

'You know, sometimes you're walking up to the gate and you get that kind of gate anxiety and you're not sure whether you weighed your bag correctly or if you forgot to weigh it,' Mr Knight explained in an interview. 'In our constant work really to just reduce pain points, to deliver a seamless experience, one part of our policy we're looking at is our carry-on bags.'

Potential Shift to Size-Based Limits

Jetstar is actively examining policies prevalent in the United States, where many airlines impose no weight restrictions for carry-on luggage on domestic flights, relying instead solely on size dimensions. Implementing such a model would mark a pioneering move for an Australian airline. 'We're looking at different options between size and weight as well,' Mr Knight confirmed. 'So at the moment it's weight-based, we're looking at different options for sizes.'

This potential change could alleviate the nervous wait many passengers endure when checking carry-on items, fearing unexpected surcharges if their luggage tips the scales. However, any new rules must carefully consider aircraft weight and balance requirements. Planes operate under strict maximum take-off weights encompassing the aircraft itself, fuel, supplies, cargo, crew, passengers, and all baggage.

Safety and Operational Considerations

Flight control issues can emerge if aircraft become overloaded or improperly loaded, making safety a paramount concern in any policy revision. Meanwhile, competitor Virgin Australia recently adjusted its carry-on allowance, effective February 2, now permitting a single bag of up to 8kg instead of the previous two small bags with a combined 7kg limit.

Jetstar's review remains ongoing, with further details pending as the airline evaluates feedback and operational feasibility. The Daily Mail has reached out to Jetstar for additional commentary on the proposed changes.
