Jetstar's head of network and fleet, Ted Knight, has openly acknowledged this system as a major 'pain point' for customers.
'You know, sometimes you're walking up to the gate and you get that kind of gate anxiety and you're not sure whether you weighed your bag correctly or if you forgot to weigh it,' Mr Knight explained in an interview. 'In our constant work really to just reduce pain points, to deliver a seamless experience, one part of our policy we're looking at is our carry-on bags.'
Potential Shift to Size-Based Limits
Jetstar is actively examining policies prevalent in the United States, where many airlines impose no weight restrictions for carry-on luggage on domestic flights, relying instead solely on size dimensions. Implementing such a model would mark a pioneering move for an Australian airline. 'We're looking at different options between size and weight as well,' Mr Knight confirmed. 'So at the moment it's weight-based, we're looking at different options for sizes.'
This potential change could alleviate the nervous wait many passengers endure when checking carry-on items, fearing unexpected surcharges if their luggage tips the scales. However, any new rules must carefully consider aircraft weight and balance requirements. Planes operate under strict maximum take-off weights encompassing the aircraft itself, fuel, supplies, cargo, crew, passengers, and all baggage.

Meanwhile, competitor Virgin Australia recently adjusted its carry-on allowance, effective February 2, now permitting a single bag of up to 8kg instead of the previous two small bags with a combined 7kg limit.
