Nicolas Jackson joins Bayern Munich on loan with obligation to buy

Nicolas Jackson has completed a loan move to Bayern Munich after the Bundesliga champions reached an agreement with Chelsea. The deal, which includes a conditional obligation to buy for €65m (£56.2m), was finalised on Monday afternoon following a tense standoff between the clubs.

The 24-year-old Senegal international had flown to Germany over the weekend to finalise the move, but Chelsea initially pulled out after Liam Delap suffered a hamstring injury against Fulham. Jackson refused to return to London, and his representatives worked to resurrect negotiations. Bayern will pay a €16.5m loan fee upfront, with the obligation to buy triggered if Jackson makes a certain number of appearances this season.

Jackson had fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea following the arrivals of Delap and Joao Pedro. He was also linked with Newcastle, who were seeking a replacement for Alexander Isak after accepting Liverpool's offer, but that move collapsed when Newcastle agreed to sign Brentford's Yoane Wissa.

On deadline day, Chelsea recalled Marc Guiu from his loan at Sunderland to provide cover up front and completed a loan deal for Brighton's Facundo Buonanotte. However, attempts to find buyers for Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, and Axel Disasi proved difficult. Chilwell agreed a permanent move to Strasbourg, but West Ham could not agree a loan for Disasi, and Sterling remained in limbo with two years left on his £325,000-a-week contract.
