Jet2 has issued a warning to passengers flying to Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, advising them to allow extra time to reach the airport due to road closures and heightened security measures. The travel alert comes as Pope Leo XIV visits the Canary Islands this week, marking the first papal visit to the Spanish archipelago.
Pope's Itinerary and Focus
The Pope's visit begins in Gran Canaria on Thursday before moving to Tenerife on Friday. His agenda includes a focus on migrant treatment, with a planned visit to a migrant centre in Tenerife. The visit has prompted significant security preparations, including the arrival of the Popemobile and armoured vehicles at Gando Air Base on Tuesday, transported by a Spanish Air Force Airbus A400M Atlas.
Jet2's Statement and Advice
In a statement on its website, Jet2 said: "Due to Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the Canaries, you may experience sudden road closures in Gran Canaria and enhanced security measures at Canaria Airport. Please allow sufficient time to get to the airport and to your departure gate." The airline reminded passengers that check-in closes 40 minutes before scheduled departure. All Jet2.com flights are expected to operate as scheduled, but any delays will be communicated via SMS, email, the Jet2 App, and the website.
Gran Canaria is a popular holiday destination for British tourists, and the warning aims to minimise disruption during the papal visit. Passengers are urged to plan their journeys accordingly and stay updated through official channels.
