Spanish flag carrier Iberia has introduced new regulations targeting non-standard luggage, with passengers facing fines of up to £125. The airline defines irregular bags as any item whose shape, material or dimensions may interfere with automated airport systems, including soft bags, plastic packages, round or oval bags, and non-rigid packaging.
From 28 January, extra charges will apply for checking in such items. Luggage will be assessed at a special check-in counter, where an additional fee may be imposed. In some cases, baggage could be refused for operational or security reasons, or flown out on a separate flight.
The charges vary by route: up to £35 for domestic flights in Spain (excluding the Canary Islands), £55 for Europe and Africa, and £110 for America and Asia. For connecting flights within Europe and Africa, the fee rises to £65, or £125 for America and Asia. These charges are in addition to the standard baggage fee.
Iberia advises passengers to pack items in standard suitcases to avoid the charge, except for sports equipment, musical instruments, or other special items. An Iberia spokesperson said the practice is widely accepted across the industry, adding that Iberia’s pricing remains below the industry average for comparable services.
