Motorists who park on their driveways have been reminded of a lesser-known Highway Code rule that can help keep both themselves and their vehicles safe. The guidance, which appears in Rule 201 of the Reversing section, encourages drivers to reverse into a parking space and drive out forward whenever possible.
What Does the Highway Code Say?
Rule 201 states: "Do not reverse from a side road into a main road. When using a driveway, reverse in and drive out if you can." Although driving forward onto a driveway is often more convenient, the Highway Code warns that doing so can be more dangerous, as motorists will need to reverse out at the start of their next journey, which may require greater skill and patience.
Drivers living on busy roads or at corners with restricted visibility could face a higher risk of accidents when reversing out of their driveways. The Highway Code also advises caution when turning around, recommending that drivers find a quiet side road instead. It advises: "Choose an appropriate place to manoeuvre. If you need to turn your vehicle around, wait until you find a safe place. Try not to reverse or turn round in a busy road; find a quiet side road or drive round a block of side streets."
Why Reversing In Is Safer
Although reversing into a driveway may take slightly longer, it provides drivers with a clearer view of the road ahead when pulling out, helping them spot approaching vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. While the advice may seem like a minor change to everyday driving habits, following it could make a significant difference to road safety.
Drivers are advised to always take care when manoeuvring, check their surroundings carefully, and never rush when reversing, particularly where visibility is limited or other road users may be nearby.
